September 9, 1954 – August 20, 2023

Wilton Creighton, also known as “Oogieman”, a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, cousin and friend was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 20, 2023.  He was a resident of Petersburg, VA.

Wilton was born September 9, 1954, to the late Ruth R. Creighton Cook and Wilton H. Newby.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Lee Creighton, also known as “Bunny” and his grandparents, Alpheus and Jerry Spriggs Creighton. 

Wilton attended Petersburg Public Schools and was employed at ABM Industries at Virginia State University until his retirement. He was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Ford, VA, and later moved his membership to the Metropolitan Baptist Church, Petesburg, VA, where he was a faithful member and served as an usher. Oogieman enjoyed dancing, joking, race cars, shopping and living life.

Wilton is survived by his wife, Althria Creighton, also known as “Sweetie Meat” of Petersburg; his daughters, Darriel Creighton (devoted) and Wilvosha Lee; step-daughters, Sherena Hill and Mashamma Bassette; sister, Mary E. Brooks of Hampton; two brothers, Ricky Creighton (Patricia) of Petersburg and Edward Newby (Deborah) of Hampton; seven grandchildren, Douglas Creighton (Courtney), Germaine Creighton, Jamya Creighton, JaKira Creighton, Tresur Hill, Raekwon Gilmore and Devontè Jones; four great grandchildren, Jhaki Brown, Khyan Gilmore, Aiden Gilmore and Ja’ce Choice.

Wilton also leaves to mourn: his sisters-in-law, Deacon Gloria Maple of Dinwiddie and Ann Coles (Gary) of Richmond; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins and numerous friends, devoted Billy Porter, Tony Harris, Donald Anderson, Calvin “Chubby” Branch, Norman Heath, Jackie Eldridge, Charles Fells and Darlene Burge. 

Oogieman had a happy, outgoing, friendly spirit and touched everyone he came in contact with.

Services will be held 3:00 P.M., Saturday, August 26, 2023, at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 1021 Halifax Street, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Lamont A. Hobbs, Pastor, eulogist and Rev. Dr. Rebecca Griffin, officiating. The interment to follow at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
