April 29, 1957 – January 26, 2023

Steven Michael King, 65, of Hopewell, VA entered into his eternal rest on January 26, 2023. The son of the late George E. King, Jr. and Mildred E. (Wood) King, Steve grew up in Hopewell, graduating from Hopewell High School in 1975. As a child, he began his love affair with performing at Mrs. Wrenn’s dance studio in Hopewell. He later joined the Thelma Olaker Youth Ballet Theater and participated in various local productions. He remained active in local theater throughout his life, performing in many shows with Swift Creek Mill Theatre and the Theater Company at Fort Lee. Most recently, he was co-founder and managing director of The Illuminated Stage Theatre Company. His broadcasting career began at WHAP in Hopewell while he was still in high school. After graduating from James Madison University in 1979, Steve worked at WXEX (now WRIC) TV, then spent several years at the CBN Cable Network, which eventually became The Family Channel. He also spent time as the executive producer of Dr. Charles Stanley’s In Touch broadcast. In his final years, he enjoyed a successful career as a voice over artist, perhaps most notably as the voice of the referee in the VR game, The Thrill of the Fight. Steve was also devoted to ministry, most recently as Associate Pastor of Digital Ministries at First Baptist Church of Hopewell. Baptized in the Hopewell Church of the Brethren, he spent his life primarily in the Nazarene Church, including many years serving at Hopewell First/Restored Hope Church of the Nazarene. He used his ministry gifts to comfort other bereaved families for several years as an officiant with J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. His numerous talents led him down many paths, both personally and professionally, which allowed him to touch countless lives over the course of his time here on earth. Steve is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Ann Marie (Davis); his adoring daughters, Lori Pitchford (Mike) of Virginia Beach and Tracy King (Jonathan) of Petersburg; his precious grandchildren, Wesley and Eric Pitchford of Virginia Beach and Lily and Lucas King of Petersburg; his mother-in-law, Agnes (Davis) Wallace (Charles), of Hopewell; as well as several cousins, nieces, nephews, and other extended family. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2023 at First Baptist Church of Hopewell. Interment will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Condolences may be registered at
