May 15, 1938  –  March 18, 2023

On Saturday March 18, 2023, Mr. Sterling Leroy Boone Sr., affectionately known as “Small Frye”, “Frye Boone from Blandford” and from the community of Fifth Ward “Security” peacefully transitioned at the age of 84 from this earthly life to his heavenly home.

Mr. Sterling Leroy Boone, Sr. of 503 South Dunlop Street, Petersburg, VA was the second oldest of 13 children. He was born May 15, 1938 at 30 N. Old Church St. Petersburg, VA to the late Leonard A. Sr, and Mary L. Boone. He was preceded in death by both his parents, his wife, Thelma Nauvata Young Boone, grandson, DeAndre J. Thomas, brother, Leonard A. Boone, Jr. and wife Margie, brother,  Nathaniel Boone and wife Shirley, brother Edward Boone and wife Althea, sister, Coreatha Boone, sister Marie Boone Pettaway and husband Thurman.

He leaves to cherish his memories two children, his daughter Nauvata M. Evans, Petersburg, VA, son, Sterling L. Boone, Jr, (Tasha) Charlotte, N; six grandchildren, JaJuan A. Thomas, Petersburg, VA, JaVonte L. Boone (Shanelle)of Charlotte, NC, Donte J.Boone (Rhiannon) of Quinton, VA, Reginald S.L. Boone of Charlotte, NC, Ashley R. Crawley of Charlotte, NC; six Great Grandchildren. DeAndre A. Thomas of Jonesboro, GA, Nasir Boone of Charlotte, NC, Malik Boone of Charlotte, NC, Avanni Boone, Quinton, VA, Amari Boone, of Quinton, VA, Bella Walker of Charlotte, NC, Quest Weathers of Charlotte, NC; three brothers, Melvin Boone (Jolene) of Lexington, SC, David Boone (Verbena) of Petersburg, VA, Preston Boone of Stafford, VA; four sisters, Shirley Barnes of Richmond, VA, Mary Davis of Philadelphia, PA, Nancy Hite of Las Vegas, NV, Ruby Fambro, of Milton, DE;  and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, devoted friends James Thomas, Ricky Reid, and Karla Saunders.

He married Thelma Nauvata Young of Petersburg, VA on November 8, 1964 until her untimely death in 2006.

He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age at Bethany Baptist Church in Petersburg, VA he sang in the Junior choir. In his adult years he fellowshipped at Westminister Presbyterian Church in Petersburg, VA. until his health declined.

Sterling attended Peabody High School in Petersburg, VA he was drafted into the US Army until he was inducted in the Army Reserve as a Staff Sergeant until his Honorable discharge. He took courses at John Tyler Community College for Supervised Study In Supervision and Management.

Sterling worked as a continuous & loyal Psychiatric Attendant & Security Attendant until his retirement at the Commonwealth of Virginia Central State Hospital in Petersburg, VA, he also worked as a Security Guard at Petersburg General Hospital(SRMC), he worked as a delivery driver for Standard Drug Store in Petersburg, VA, he worked as a Taxi driver for Boulevard Cab, Petersburg, VA

He was a member of the Elite Horseman Social Club of Petersburg, VA., he was a member of the Army Historical Foundation National Museum United States Army, he was a Cowboys fan, he loved Westerns, Wheel of fortune, Jeopardy and Family Feud. MMA, Golf, Horse Racing, Track and Field, Boxing and Baseball. He loved his family dearly, cooking, grilling, socializing, singing, sitting on the front porch, laughing and joking. His favorite vacation was the beach.

Homegoing service will be held 12 P.M., Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at the Petersburg Chapel of Bland Funeral Home, 137 Harrison St., Petersburg, VA, 23803. Interment to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.
