August 12, 1938 – May 22, 2023

SGM (Ret) Walter J. Hill, age 84, peacefully departed this life on Monday, May 22, 2023, at his residence in Petersburg, Virginia.

He was born August 12, 1938, in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Rosa Terry.  He was baptized at an early age and was a member of Union Branch Baptist Church, Prince George County, Virginia.

He was educated in the Birmingham Alabama Public School System and was a graduate of Parker High School in Birmingham.  He would later obtain his Bachelor’s degree from Saint Leo University.

Walter enlisted in the United States Army in 1958 and honorably served for 30 years.  He reached the rank of Sergeant Major (E9).  During his tenure in the Army, he served on several post throughout the world to include: Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Fort Moore, Georgia (formerly known as Fort Benning); Fort Bragg North Carolina, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, Vietnam, Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, Korea, Germany, Fort Bliss, Texas, Alexandria, Virginia and Fort Gregg-Adams (formerly known as Fort Lee) where he completed multiple tours.  Walter earned several awards to include: Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Parachute Bage, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Meritorious Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He also received numerous Letters of Commendations and accolades.  After a successful military career, Walter became a Government Service (GS) employee where he was employed for 17 years until his second retirement.

After celebrating 58 years of matrimony, he was preceded in death by the love of his life, Barbara J. Hill.  Walter was also preceded in death by his loving grandmother, Mary Hill; and his uncle, John Hill.

Walter leaves to cherish his memories: one son, Henry Hill (Dr. Sonja) of New Kent, VA; grandchildren, Darryl Hill (Tanesia) of Norfolk, VA, Henry A. Hill (Monica) of Prince George County, VA and Brittnae Hill of Dumfries, VA; five great grandchildren, Deneshia, Zymareon, Daijah, Aleigha and Henry “Lil Hank”; aunt, Mary Hill of  Birmingham, AL; a cousin that he affectionately called “my favorite cousin”, Gwendolyn Fuller of Birmingham, AL; and a host of devoted cousins and other relatives and friends too numerous to name.

Walter was a proud and dedicated member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Triple Nickle (555th Parachute Infantry Battalion) and numerous other organizations.

Services will be held 1:00 P.M., Thursday, June 1, 2023, in the Chapel of J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Dr. Andrew J. White, Sr., eulogist. The interment will be held at Elwood Cemetery, Birmingham, AL.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at the funeral establishment.
