April 10, 1939 – March 19, 2023

Mildred Delores Thorne began her journey on earth on April 10, 1939, in Washington, DC She was the third child of children born to the late Lofton and Mildred Lee. Delores was an excellent student and helped her younger sisters and brothers read. On Sunday March 19, 2023, God called her into His presence from the Tri Cities Hospital in Hopewell, VA.
Delores known as “LOIS” was educated in the D.C. Public Schools system until her senior year when the family moved to Hopewell, VA., where she attended and graduated from Carter G. Woodson High School and briefly attended Virginia State University. While in Hopewell she met and married the love of her life Charles E. Thorne and from this union they had five children: Arliss, Wanda, Charlotte, Charles Jr. and Latrecia.
The two decided to relocate back to her hometown of Washington, D.C. and upon her return Lois started her career in the workforce at the United States Postal Service as a clerk and later worked for Housing and Urban Development before working and retiring from the Government Printing Office. Deloris and Charles resided in the Washington/ Maryland area for over twenty years until they moved back to his hometown of Hopewell, VA. After retirement, where she shared a home with her daughter Latrecia and two grandsons Francisco and Thori Thorne.
Lois developed the love of Christ while attending First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights, Washington, D.C. She accepted the Lord under the leadership of Reverend William Tyler. She later joined Friendship Baptist Church, Hopewell, VA, where she was a member of the Usher Board. Delores also did community outreach at homeless shelters in the District of Columbia and served as a substitute teacher in the Maryland School System. Lois also enjoyed spending time with her dear friends Evangelist Emily DeCarlo and sister in-law, Dorothy Thorne.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Thorne Sr., parents, Lofton and Mildred Lee,daughters, Wanda Davis and Arliss Tolbert, grandson Eric Davis along with her sister Constance, andbrothers, Joseph, William, Reginald, and Lofton Lee Jr.
Mildred leaves to cherish her legacy: her son, Charles E. Thorne Jr. (Veronica); daughters, Charlotte and Latrecia (Bre) Thorne; 13 grandchildren, Louis, Anthony and Chanda Davis, Chaz, Qiana and Shadon Tolbert, Glenard Thorne, Charles Applewhite, Taraji (Nicholas), Tiana and Taylor Thorne, Francisco (Ashley) and Thori Thorne; 18 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters, Juanita Glover, Martha (Samuel) Morgan, Wilhelmina Matthews and Brenda Hemmingway; 2 brothers, Stanley (Quinn) and Michael (Verilyn) Lee. She was very cherished by her niece, Shirleta Glover along with 21 other nieces and nephews, 64 grand nieces and nephews; 42 great grands; 2 greats nieces and 2 close friends, Evangeline Brown and Dorothy Thorne, and an host of other relatives and friends.
Homegoing service will be held 11 A.M., Friday, March 31, 2023 at Friendship Baptist church, 1305 Arlington Rd., Hopewell, VA, 23860, Rev. Dr. Norwood G. Carson, Pastor, eulogist. Interment will follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.
