March 3, 1946 – July 13, 2023

Peacefully on Thursday, July 13, 2023, Marjorie D. Pate departed her earthly home at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, Richmond, VA. “Margie”, as she was affectionately called, was born on March 3, 1946, in Northampton County, NC to the late Andrew and Merdis Pate, Sr. She moved to Hopewell, VA as a toddler and resided there until her passing.
At an early age, Margie accepted Christ as her personal Savior, was baptized and joined Union Baptist Church, Hopewell, VA. Being reared in Hopewell, Margie was educated in the Hopewell Public School System.
In 2008, Margie and John R. Hamlin were united in marriage. She worked and retired with over 26 years of service from Southside Virginia Training Center. She was also employed with the City of Hopewell and Fort Gregg-Adams (formerly Fort Lee) NCO Club.
Margie’s buoyant personality, quick wit, and friendliness created a large network of family, friends and colleagues. She was fun-loving, always smiling and cheerful. Margie enjoyed listening to “oldies but goodies”, dancing and playing her favorite game of chance, “Bingo”.
Margie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John R. Hamlin; sisters, Marian Gary (Thomas), Joyce Pate (Richard), Joyce Blanding and Helen Entzminger (Isaiah); brother, Andrew Pate, Jr. (Catherine); and her sister-in-law, Joan Pate.
To celebrate Margie’s memory, she leaves to cherish: her sons, Al Pate (Jackie) and Rico Pate (Regina); grandchildren, Alvernon Pate, Jr., Dmarcus Pate, Malika Turner and Pria Pate; great grandchildren, Zaylah Davis and Dream Cheatham; sister, Teresa Rogers (Haywood); bonus sister, Francine Tatum (Joseph); brothers, Garland Pate (Shelia), Roscoe Moody and Larry Hudson (Charlene); uncle, James Moody; devoted niece, Joyce Bellamy (Edward); devoted nephews, Kawaune Rawlings (devoted Krystal) and Lafayette Pate (devoted Jackie); supportive nephew, Victor Moody; dedicated special friend, Eugene Tyler; her extended bingo buddies; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends and acquaintances.
Services will be held 11:00 A.M., Friday, July 21, 2023, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax Street, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs, Sr., Pastor and eulogist. The interment to follow at the Cool Spring Baptist Church Cemetery, Gaston, NC.
