January 13, 1935  –  March 25, 2023

Mae Henrietta McFarland was born on January 13, 1935 to Josie Allen and Samuel W. McFarland in Dolphin, VA. Raised in Hopewell, VA in the “Dupont City” neighborhood, and later in life she learned that her given name was actually Henrietta Mary.

She attended Hopewell Public Schools through the 10th grade and married Louis Bernard Craighead, who passed away April 26, 2004 and from that union five children were born Marvin Louis, Gregory Dean, Josie Mae, Michelle and Whitney Bernard.

She worked as a domestic, a waitress and a short order cook. Most of her career was spent at Jordan Point Country Club where she was known for her glowing personality, outstanding chili and delicious Reuben sandwich. She retired after 30 years of service.

Shortly thereafter, she volunteered for several years with the Foster Grandparent program, serving little children at daycare and at the Woodlawn Learning Center head start program. Mae was a long-time member of First Baptist Church City Point, where she served as an usher and Sunday School member. In 2001, she moved her membership to One Crying in the Wilderness Apostolic Church of Deliverance, where she became the Church Mother, served on the Pastor Aid Committee, Missionary President and a Sunday School Teacher.

January 13, 2020 was proclaimed as Mae Henrietta McFarland Craighead day, and the City of Hopewell wished her a happy 85th birthday. She will be remembered as a beautiful, soft-spoken, kindhearted lady. Her neighbors will remember her sitting on her porch greeting people as they passed by. Like the Proverbs 31 woman, “her children arise and call her blessed…”

She was preceded in death by her parents, a special aunt, Ella Brisbane and her brother, Samuel W. McFarland Jr.

Mrs. Mae was blessed with 11 grandchildren , Jacqueline, Emmanuel, Kamilah, Karima, Ian, Jules, Mariah, Vickie, Charlene, Lorraine and Dandrick; 14 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. Her family, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, are left to cherish her memory.
