July 16, 1945 — August 3, 2023

Joyce Spear (nee Jakins) came into the world with a bang on July 16, 1945 in England, grew up in South Africa, and moved to the United States of America in 2005. She departed this world on August 3, 2023 in Hopewell, Virginia, after a long battle with PBC, surrounded by her daughters.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Eric and Susanna Jakins (nee Kallis), and her siblings, Cynthia Spangenberg and Freddie Jakins. She is survived by her daughters, Terri Moller (Conrad), Audrey Dube (Kirk) and Mary Dubeau (Troy) and her 15 grandchildren.

Joyce touched countless lives across the globe with a lifetime of dedicated service and indomitable strength. She was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved her Savior with her whole heart. Her example of faith and service in the face of personal trials is inspiring.

Joyce made friends wherever she went. She drew people to her with her easily recognizable infectious laugh and sense of humor. She enjoyed a good practical joke. She was a “people person”– gregarious, funny, firm in her convictions, always trying to help resolve problems and make life better for her friends, and like a sphinx with people’s confidences.

Her interests and talents were myriad and varied–quilting, sewing, cross-stitching, candle wicking, tatting, cooking, baking, cake decorating, dancing, singing, organizing (things, people, events); perhaps her greatest talent was teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ with conviction and clarity.

Our mother was the bravest, strongest, most multi-talented and faithful woman we know. She took great comfort in hymns and scriptures. The promise in Doctrine & Covenants 82:10 that blessings ALWAYS follow obedience to God’s laws was one of her favorites. Growing up, the weight of the expectations that came with being “Joyce’s daughters” occasionally chafed. Now we consider it an honor to be part of her legacy as “Joyce’s daughters.”

Until we meet again at Jesus’ feet. We love you, Mommy. “[Her] lord said unto [her], Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” ~~Matthew 25:21
