April 16, 1938 – May 18, 2023

Today we celebrate the life of Sargent First Class John Walter Piercy Jr, who transitioned from this life to rest eternally in his heavenly home on May 18, 2023.

John was born on April 16, 1938, in Petersburg Virginia, to the late John Walter and Rosa Piercy. John was educated within the Petersburg School System where he graduated from Peabody High School in 1955. He went on to further his education by receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Virginia State University. At an early age, John was baptized and later became a member of First Baptist Church, Petersburg, Virginia. He later united with Gillfield Baptist Church, Petersburg, Virginia, where he remained a member until his passing. After graduating from High School, John jointed the United States Air Force. After serving for 13 years, he enlisted into the Army Reserve in 1967 and served 24 years. During his military career, John received numerous Awards and Decorations. After retiring from t he Army Reserves, John was employed throughout the years by Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corporation as supervisor, Southside Virginia Training Center as supervisor and Southside Regional Medical Center Security Department as a supervisor. 

John was preceded in death by his first wife, Claudette Johnson Piercy, infant son Chip, three sisters, Sylvia Brown Taylor, Rosina Jackson and Lillian Pegram. From the union of the late Claudette Piercy, three sons were born, John III (Monique), Kevin (Stacy) and Keith; grandchildren, Kristina, Kevin Piercy Jr., and Tahjae McDougald, and one great grandchild, Jordyn McDougald.

On July 5, 2005, John married Doris Glover. From this union came a bonus son, Donald Glover (Yvonne), and three bonus grandchildren, Derrick Glover, Eric Glover (Lynette), and Donald Glover Jr. 

John loved to travel (especially cruises). He took great joy in celebrating his birthdays and spending time with his family. Baseball was his favorite sport, and he was a fan of the New York Yankees. He also enjoyed music. You could visit him on any day of the week, and he would be listening to his “oldies but goodies”. He held membership in the following associations: Peabody High School National Alumni Association Inc., Greater Petersburg Area Alumni Association of Virginia State University, Petersburg Triad and The National Triple Nickle Association (part of the U.S. Military 555th Parachute Infantry.

John leaves 18 years of precious and loving memories from his loving, devoted and dedicated wife, Doris. He is also survived by his sister, Evelyn Jones of Richmond Virginia, beloved sister-in-law,  Gloria Merrick and brother-in-law Deacon James Merrick; loving niece, Gloria Carey (Reverend Andrew Carey). Dear friends: Reverend Dr. Grady Powell, Reverend Dr. George W. Lyons, Barbara and Langston Johnson, Teresa and Theron Terry, Vera and Charles Perry, Deacon and Deaconess David and Sharon Embry, Robyn and Lawrence Mines, Paulette Bell, Wayne and Star McCray, Eva Merry, Muriel Spratley, and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends, and the Gillfield Baptist Church Family and Caregivers: Linda Mack and Doretha Zimmerman.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M., Thursday, May 25, 2023, at Gillfield Baptist Church, 209 Perry Street, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Dr. George W.C. Lyons, Jr., Pastor and officiating. The interment to follow at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery.
