August 10, 1965 – May 23, 2023

James Eddie Shipmon, Jr., affectionately known as “Jimmy” of “Jim”, was born on August 10, 1965, to Anita and James E. Shipmon, Sr. surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Alice Peterson; great grandmother, Annie Zimmerman; uncles, Earlen, Charles, Jerry and George Jr.; and his aunts, Barbara, Yvonne and Carolyn.

Jimmy attended school in Germany, Japan, Prince George County and graduated from Petersburg High School. He was offered awards from the different places he went to school. After graduating, he attended PARC Services for many years and he enjoyed his time there. He also moved in the Sage House for a few years until he wanted to return home.

Jimmy was a Christian. He enjoyed attending church, singing and clapping his hands to gospel music. He joined the usher board at Faith and Hope Temple Church of God in Christ under Rosa Johnson Tuma. He also ushered at Fort Lee Gospel Service under Mr. and Mrs. Fisburne. Jimmy Loved God  and enjoyed attending bible study. He also personified acts of kindness and loved sharing. Jimmy loved being a part of the Superkids Ministry under their founder, Delores Lane.

Jimmy enjoyed being a part of many activities. He loved to take part and attending in the Eagle Eyrie Annual Retreat, Lawrenceville, VA. He was taught Jesus and would socialize with his friends. He looked forward to going every year! There, that put on several plays, had parties for every holiday and hosted “The Night to Shine” where they would ride in limousines and walk the red carpet. He also enjoyed attending Camp Caster Seal.

Jimmy loved shopping for clothes, CD’s, looking at homes for sale, eating out and watching his favorite TV shows (The Price Is Right, Let’s Make A Deal, The Little House on the Prairie and The Walton’s). He loved to travel, talk on the phone, spend time with family and friends, cooking, listening to music and singing. He was simply a joy to be around.

Jimmy has travelled out to Europe, Japan and Hawaii where visited his niece for two weeks. He also travelled to Los Angeles, CA twice and attended The Price is Right and Let’s Make a Deal. He also went to Disney World, Magic Kingdom, St. Louis, MS, South Carolina and many other places.

Jimmy leaves to cherish his memories: his mother, Anita Shipmon; brother, Anthony Shipmon (Susanna); special aunt, Dizzianne Zimmerman and Cletus Coston and Robert Coston; aunt, Carolyn Jones (Michael), Yvone Canty and Kenneth Canty, Bobby Clenskscales; nephews, Mike Johnson, Devin C. Peuisall, Amber Shipmon; cousins, Ebony Connor, Darrel Webster, Earlene Williams, Sherry Wander (John), Bennie and Dwayne Canty, Michael Clenskscales, Kelvin Clenskscales, Brandy Walker, Kenneth Jr., Ebony Canty, Phillip, Phelquan, Keneka and Kentrell Canty; a mother-like figure, Diane Franklin; Bessie Selloway who was special to him; special friends, Tasha Pyatt, Monique Morris and family, Phoeke Brown, Gemmie Crawford, Candy White, Melinda Robinson, Patricia Bowie, Helen Harris, Kathy Ellis, Mr. Mack, Yvonne Humes, Debra Dogget, Gabrita, Alaunda Gilmore who was like a sister to him, and Jada, Marilyn and Jon’nae Gilmore, Shanta Pearson, Ruth Gholson, Wenette Kelly, David Cloud who went to church with him sometimes, Tyree, Bill, his friends and PARC Services and the Superkids Ministries; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The Family extends special thanks to the Staff of St. Frances Hospital and the ICU Unit, floor nurses and techs, and his Faith and Hope family.

Services will be held 4:00 P.M., Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Faith and Hope Temple Church of God in Christ, 1800 E. Washington Street, Petersburg, VA, Bishop Herman Crockett, Jr., Pastor and eulogist. The interment will be held 2:00 P.M., Sunday, June 4, 2023 at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Wilmington, NC.

The family will receive relatives and friends 5:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M., Friday, June 2, 2023 at the funeral establishment.
