Haywood Massenburg

July 7, 1953 – May 5, 2022

Mr. Haywood Donnell Massenburg, 68, of Stony Creek, Virginia, affectionately known as “Nippy”, entered eternal rest on May 5, 2022, joining his parents, Hattie Daisy Taylor Massenburg and James Massenburg; his sister, Anna T. Urquhart: and two brothers, James L. Massenburg, and Rev. Alfred L. Massenburg.

Haywood was born on September 7, 1953 in Sussex, Virginia. Haywood attended Sussex County Schools. He accepted Jesus Christ at a very young age where he became a member of Hunting Quarter Baptist Church (his family church). We are happy to know that Nippy is now at home and in peace with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Nippy loved and cherished his family and oftentimes he spoke about how much his family meant to him and he had this great love for his family. He was a dedicated, hardworking man, who was also a crafty handyman that loved to build and repair things.  There wasn’t much he believed he could not build, fix, or repair, making him a “Jack of All Trade”; and always willing to lend a helping hand, including caring for those in need. Haywood was well known and well respected in the community.  Nippy was someone who never met a stranger, to him everyone was a friend, even the people he had not met. If you want to find him when he’s not home, check by Stony Creek’s Convenience Store.

Haywood is survived by his son, Steven Donnell Ford Gibson) of Humboldt, Tennessee; three sisters, Mildred Hobbs (John) of Macon, Georgia, Gladys Chambliss of Petersburg, Virginia, and one devoted sister, Dr. Pastor Rose Bonner of Alexandria, Virginia; four aunts, Maggie Meekins, of Richmond, Virginia, Ruth Gilliam, and Eurgentine Taylor both of Stony Creek, Virginia, and Earlene Johnson (Rev. George) of Jarrett Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Myrtie Massenburg (Rev. Alfred) of Chesterfield, Virginia, and Catherine Massenburg (James) of Stony Creek, Virginia; a very special “step-son,” Shawn Lamont Moore; a caring niece, Sandy Boone; a dear friend, Elliott Shand; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, who also mourn his passing.

Services will be held 12:00 Noon, Saturday, May 14, 2022 at Galilee Baptist Church, 12392 Lee Avenue, Stony Creek, VA. The interment to follow at Hunting Quarter Baptist Church Cemetery.
