Gertrude N. Lewis

Gertrude Elizabeth Nicholas Lewis, daughter of the late Robert R. Nicholas and Maddie Crump Nicholas, was born May 3, 1925. She departed this life on April 22, 2022. Gertrude was educated in Dinwiddie County, Virginia.

She worked at Titmus Optimal Factory and a CNA at Petersburg General Hospital for over 40 years. She also worked part-time at Dr. Herbert Hoover in1956, raising Mark, Lisa, and Craig.

Mother Lewis was a member of Third Baptist Church under Reverend George L. Williams and her husband Reverend William Lewis, Associate Pastor (who preceded her in death). She served in Missionary Circle, the senior choir and hospitality ministry. She left Third Baptist and joined Corner Stone Church on Terrace Avenue under Elder George Parham and Mother Evelyn Parham. Mother Lewis participated in the missionary, senior and choir ministry. She then joined Mission Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, under the leadership of Elder Melvin Taylor and Mother Sharon Taylor. While at Mission Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, she served as President of the pastor’s aide ministry, missionary ministry and the hospitality ministry. She then moved to Bear, Delaware, where she was affiliated with True Holiness Temple under the leadership of Dr. Gloria J. Lewis.

She loved to cook her sweet rolls, rice pudding, potato salad, and anything else she to her liking. She also loved taking care of her grandchildren and the special love bond between her great-great grandson, Kameron affectionately known as “Kay-Kay” did not go unnoticed.

Mother Gertrude Lewis affectionately known as “Gaga”, the name that she got excited over her grandson Robert R. Lewis, Jr.as a baby. Until this day, all of her extended family at True Holiness Temple also calls her. “Gaga”. Mother Lewis was loved by all and her sweet spirit will be tremendously missed.

She was preceded in death by grandson, Andre L. Lewis. Mother Lewis leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Deacon Robert R. Lewis, Sr. (Dr. Gloria J. Lewis); grandchildren, Bishop Robert R. Lewis, Jr. (DeLisa), Brian K. Lewis (Ericka), and Kimberly A. Lewis-Powell (Mark), great grandchildren, Thomas Lamar, Aleah, Andrea, Amber, Robert, and Anerryah, Shadaye, Porchia, and India; great-great grandchildren, Tavin, London, Ryan, Kody, Kamille, Kameron, Daylen, Tyzaire, Teija, Taylor Tayla, Ameena and Amirah. Mother Gertrude had a few of the family that took good care of her, Darlene, Gail (had her over their houses), Mary, Larry, Sonya, Lisa, Mark, Mattie, McNeal, Nita and her husband, Snooks and Bessie and a host of nieces, nephews, cousin, other relatives, her loving family of Mission Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and True Holiness Temple and friends.

Services will be held 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at Mission of Our Lord Jesus Christ, 227 Shore Street, Petersburg, VA.  The interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.
