November 24, 1944 – June 23, 2023

On Friday evening, June 23, 2023, our hearts were saddened by the passing of our loved one, Deacon George Pryor Faison. He was a life-long resident of Prince George County, (Disputanta) Virginia. George was born on November 24, 1944, to the late Junius H. Knox and Anniebelle Faison. He was raised in Disputanta by the late Deacon Richard Alexander Goodwyn and Deaconess Ruth Goodwyn.

He gave his life to Christ at an early age, was baptized and became a member of First Baptist Church, Disputanta, Virginia and remained a devoted member for 70 plus years. At First Baptist Church Disputanta, he played many roles: he possessed the gift of playing the piano by ear and was well-known for his gift, was the minister of music playing the piano for over 50 years for the Men Chorus and Sanctuary Choir to name a few as well as for other churches in the surrounding communities. He was also the Co-Chairman of the Deacon Board and a member of the Pastors Aid. 

He was the owner of Faison’s Janitorial for several years where he had a contract with the City of Petersburg, Virginia. He loved gardening and planted 2-3 gardens per year to share fresh vegetables with family and friends in the community at no cost. He also enjoyed fishing, spending time with his grandchildren and hanging out with his Army Buddies.  He always had a sense of humor and kept a smile on his face. 

George was a graduate of J.E.J. Moore High School Class of 1962, as Salutatorian. He was a graduate of Virginia State College (University) with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education (1973); a MEd in Agricultural Education (1976); and a MEd in Administration and Supervision (1982).

George served Active Duty and as a Reservist in the United States Army from 1969-1972  in the areas of Stock Control and Account Specialist; Aircraft and Repair Parts Specialist and Retention NCO. His duties stations were Vietnam (8/69-8/70); and 300th Support Group, Fort Lee, Virginia. During those service dates he worn the rank of SP5, E5 before his departure in the military services.

George went on to continue to support the military services as an employee with the Fort Lee Quartermaster School, as an Instruction System Specialist, where duties included writing Army Training Manuals for upcoming Instructors until retiring from the Quartermaster in January 1996. During his time of Military and Civilian Service he received the following awards:  National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars; Army Commendation Medal; Air Medal; Presidential Unit Citation; and Meritorious (Blue and Red) Unit Citation.

George was a member of the following organizations: John D. Combo American Legion Post 120 (Disputanta, VA); NAACP Prince George County Branch; Masonic Lodge Avery #110 (Petersburg, VA),  Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. – Alpha Kappa Sigma Alumni Chapter (16 September 1976), Petersburg  SCLC.

George will be greatly missed by all his family, blood and extended, as well as friends. 

George was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 plus years, Deaconess Lilly Ann Jackson Faison; mother, Anniebelle Faison; foster parents, Deacon Richard A. Goodwyn and Deaconess Ruth Goodwyn; brother, Earl Faison; sisters, Annie Clinkscales and Mollie Jones; foster sister, Constance L Jones; foster brother, Dan J. Goodwyn; brother-in-law, Sidney Jackson; niece, Helena Hughes; nephews, Melvin B. Hughes, Reginald L. Hughes, and Warren Faison.

George leaves to cherish his memories his three children, loving daughter, LaTonya Faison, LaTricia Ann Faison, and son, George Faison II; three grandchildren, Morgan Dickens, Ashlyn and Preston Boseman; two sisters, Mary Rose Hughes and Deborah Lewis; three sisters-in-law, Rosa Lee Goodwyn, Christine Jackson and Joyce Pierce; brother-in-law, Oliver Jackson; nephews, Richard and Timmy Goodwyn and Larry Williams; loving devoted niece, Juanita Goodwyn; loving pet, Sasha; devoted friends, Lawrence Tucker (childhood), Earnest Allen, Al Justice, Deacon Herbert (Spider), Deacon Alphonso Evans, Dennis and Alphonso Taylor; neighbor, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Dubovsky; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends too numerous to name.

Services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 1, 2023, at Union Branch Baptist Church, 3356 Union Branch Road, South Prince George, VA, Rev. Dr. Archie German, Sr., Pastor and Rev. Dr. Andrew J. White, Sr., eulogist. The interment to follow at Southlawn Memorial Park.
