George Elwood Smith passed away peacefully on March 14, 2022 in Charlotte, North Carolina. George was born on August 10, 1942, and grew up in Roanoke, VA. He graduated from Lucy Addison High School and settled in Charlotte in the early 1970’s. George worked for Delta Airlines and retired after 25 years of service.
George was a family-focused man who took pride in the many accomplishments of his family. Gatherings and celebrations were some of his most enjoyed times. He enjoyed attending birthday celebrations, graduations and all major events for his children and grandchildren.
Some of George’s favorite pastimes with his wife Nancy, included: dancing and traveling to various destinations to visit with family members and just to have fun! He also enjoyed his frequent talks with his cousins Benita, Shirley, Elsie and Beverly; having breakfast regularly with his son, Ken; daily conversations and sharing in every special moment and milestone in his son Gerald’s life; weekly chats with his daughter Kristie and he doted on his grandchildren who bought him great joy!
George was predeceased by his parents, David and Lula Smith; six siblings, Lannie, Addie, Samuel, Matthew and David and his bonus daughter, Jeannie. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 30 years, Nancy Thompson Smith; his three loving children, Ken (Charise), Gerald (Phillistine) and Kristie; four grandchildren, Kenya, Kaylyn, Jaylon and Trenten. He was also honored to have bonus children, Danny, Melissa “Denise”, Lori (Russel), Curtis, Scott (Joanna), and Janette (Greg). He leaves to mourn a host of relatives and friends.
A graveside service was held 12:00 Noon, Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at the Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery, 750 Page Street, Petersburg, VA.
