November 30, 1946 – March 16, 2023

On Wednesday, March 15, 2023, God called one of his beloved angels home, Ms. Ethel Maye Hayes. Ethel was born on November 30, 1946 in Carson, VA, to the late Thomas Maye “Bubba Toe” and Virginia Brown Stewart.
She was baptized at an early age and became a member of Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church in Carson, VA, where she sang in the combined choir.
Ethel was employed within Fort Lee, for 10 years. She retired from the Petersburg Public School Transportation Department.
She loved to cook when there was a family gathering. Ethel would make her famous lasagna and on Thanksgiving she would make her famous sweet potato pie and cheesecake; and the family look forward to it. Ethel loved watching television and on any given day you could find her in front of the television in her recliner watching one of her favorite game shows.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Starlettia Hayes; stepfather, Jerry Stewart; four brothers, Elmer Maye, James Maye, Arthur Maye and Robert Maye; one son-in-law, Calvin Baskerville; five aunts and three uncles.
Ethel leaves to cherish her memory: a very devoted daughter, Margaret Hayes-Baskerville; six grandchildren, Mandisa Hayes (very devoted), Edward Hayes, Osirian Hayes (Nataiya), Emmanuel Hayes (Tiffany), Aaron Hayes (Trinique), Marlon Whitfield (Brittney); fourteen great grandchildren, two devoted Teara and Ketarious Hayes; three great-great grandchildren, two devoted Andraeh and Faithe Peterson; three sisters, Eunice Briggs, Gladys Trotter (Calvin), and Sylvia Maye; two brothers, Elder Earl Maye (Esther) and William Maye; two devoted friends, Walter and Daisy Sykes; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 25, 2023 in the Chapel of J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, VA. The interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.
