Don L. Wheat departed this life peacefully at Wonder City Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on Saturday, July 1, 2023, in Hopewell, VA. He was born on July 7, 1943, to the late Edward and Pearl Wheat in Hopewell, VA. He was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of City Point, Hopewell, VA and served on the trustee board.
Don graduated from Carter G. Woodson High School and worked for Honeywell/Allied Signal and retired with 31 years of service. He was a United States Army Veteran, having served in Vietnam.
In 1978, Don moved to Petersburg, VA, and then to Prince George, VA where he resided before his passing. He loved cleaning his vehicles and was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan.
Don was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Jr.; niece, Vonda; and nephew, Donnell.
Don is survived by his devoted wife, Sandra; son, Corey (Melissa); grandchildren, Kendrick, Megan and Ryan; several great nieces, nephews and cousins with Mary Carter being devoted. Additionally, Don is survived by his niece, Felicia Gilmore (Gary); devoted friends, Stella Copeland, Mike Goodwin (Margie), Garland Pate, Shelia Webb, Lonnie Thomas, Rick Bowen, Anita Mahoney, Sandra Burcham, Belinda Mann-Taylor, Darius Harris (Nancy), and Johnnie Grate (Margo); the waitresses at the Yankee Coffee Shop; special neighbors, Otis, Dana, Charles, Sandra, Marie, and Nancy; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Special thanks are extended to the Staff of Tri-Cities Hospital and ICU, Wonder City Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and Gentiva Hospice, Don’s church family, and all who helped us travel this short, but sad journey. We would not have done it without you.
Services will be held 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at First Baptist Church of City Point, 1117 Pierce Street, Hopewell, VA, the Rev. Rudolph Randall, Pastor. The interment to follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Monday, July 10, 2023 at the funeral establishment.
