November 3, 1920 – August 22, 2023

On August 22, 2023, God dispatched His Angels to bring Bertha M. Brown to her heavenly home. At the Gate, the door opens, she was greeted by her, mother, Lillian (1985) and maughter, Charlotte Ann (2004) who preceded her in death. Bertha M. Brown, a graceful lady at the age of 102, formerly of 916 High Pearl Street, departed this life at Lucy Corr Health Center. Affectionately, known as “Granny, Ms. Bert and/or BertBert”, was born on November 3, 1920 to the late Lillian B. Mason.
On March 30, 1939, Charlotte Ann was born to her and the late Charles Brown. As a young adult, Bertha left Petersburg and headed North, where she would have gainful employment. Upon returning to Petersburg, she was employment by the late Jennings Titus Family until her retirement.
Bertha loved entertaining therefore, preparing fancy dishes and delightful desserts was her forte. But her speciality to most, was that delicious potato salad, tuna moose, and many others as well as her pies and cakes. She and her friends Ollie M. Matthews and Lillie G. Joynes shared these great recipes on many events/celebrations.
Bertha was a faithful member of Oak Street A.M.E. Zion Church; she served as a Deaconess, Life Member of the W.H.O.M. Society, and the Hospitality Committee.
The Legacy of her life will be remembered by her adopted grandchildren, which were her heartbeats, Morrisa A. Dugger, Eric L. Tucker, Jr. and Tevin J. Tucker whom she was always there for, from birth to see them grow into adulthood; adopted daughters, Ramona G. Tucker and Zelda D. Tucker-Dugger; adopted son, Eric L. Tucker, Sr. (whom she called “Partner”); lifelong friends, Ollie M. Matthews, Mary L. Wynn and Karen Reese; great neighbors, Yvette Mason and Willie Jones; extended family, The Gradnigos of Kentucky and her Oak Street Church Family.
Many thanks to the James River Hospice Team for comfort care and support. Special thanks to Floreen Danquah and Tasha Stallings for the “special care and devoted time” given to Granny for the past two years.
