May 31, 1927 – May 22, 2023

On Monday, May 22, 2023, God and His Heavenly angels called home our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt, Augusta Mae Pegram and welcomed her home in heaven.  Augusta was born May 31, 1927 in Halifax, VA, to the late Robert McNear and Elsie Barksdale McNear.  

She was a member of Royal Baptist Church, Petersburg, VA, for over sixty years where she served on the Deaconesses Board, Choir, Nurses union, Sunday School Teacher.  In 2021, she moved to Fuquay-Varina, NC, with her daughter and son and joined Strickland Grove Missionary Baptist Church where her son is pastor. She retired from Titus Optical company (Zeiss).

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Pegram; four brothers, Daniel, Haywood, Edward and Lorenzo McNea; three sisters, Pauline Reed, Cleopatra Plummer, and Mary Powell; two sons, Walter McNear and Levy Jones III.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Jones-Brown; two son,s Lemont Jones and Letaz Jones, Sr. (Avis) all of North Carolina; one god-daughter, Roselyn Hedges of Richmond VA; daughter-in-law, Ruby McNear of Woodbridge, VA, and June Cooper Jones of Petersburg, VA; seventeen grandchildren, thirty-nine great grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Services will be held 11:00 A.M., Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Royal Baptist Church, 316 St. Mark Street, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Dr. Phillip Williams, Pastor and eulogist. The interment to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.
