November 23, 1956 – June 22, 2023

Antonio Fredinand Gates, affectionately known as “Fred”, was born November 23, 1956, in Petersburg, Virginia to the late Charles Gates, Sr. and Willie Anna Gates in their home. He departed this life on June 22, 2023, at home in Hopewell, Virginia where he was with his loving and devoted wife, Patricia Cody Gates.

Fred attended high school in Petersburg and then served in the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged at the end of his service. He later went to work at the Veterans Health Administration and worked there for 10 years until he retired in November 2019.

Fred was hard working and received frequent recognition from his coworkers. He took pride in his work, and he cared about his family. Fred had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good laugh. He enjoyed listening to music and watching westerns with his wife, “Trice” as he lovingly called her.

Fred was preceded in death by his brothers, Floyd Jackson, Barry Gates, James Gates, and Claudius Gates; and his son, Carlos Taylor.

To cherish his memory, Fred leaves behind: his wife; sons, Ronell Taylor and Demond Blakes; stepson, Christopher Cody; granddaughter, Kayla Taylor; step granddaughter, KeKe Cody; his brother, Charles Gates, Jr.; sisters, Charlene Edmunds, Dorothy Herndon, and Shirley Irving; devoted friend, Dexter Samuels; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends all of which are too many to name.

Services will be held 1:00 P.M., Sunday, July 2, 2023, in the Chapel of J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, VA.
