November 26, 1940 – April 23, 2023

LTC (Ret) John Fitzhugh Jones, Jr., 82, of South Chesterfield, VA, transitioned peacefully on Sunday, April 23, 2023, after a brief illness.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John F. Jones, Sr. and Willinette Johnson Jones; four brothers, Elmore, Carl, Robert and Martin Jones.

 Surviving John are his two  loving daughters, Andrea Michelle Jones (Levi), and Tandrea “Toni” Jones Mayfield (Delvin), and their mother, Brenda Jiggetts Jones Walls; three grandsons, Eddie “Trey” Brackens II, Hezekiah Mayfield, and Cameron Artis; one granddaughter, Logan Jones;  two great grandsons, Roman Artis and Cameron Artis, Jr.; two great-granddaughters, Kyneice and Ellie’ana Brackens; a devoted sister, Marva “Sweets” Jones Williams; three nephews, Elmore Jones, Robert Jones, Jr., and Antonio Hawkins: three nieces, Monique Washington-Jones, Jovani Johnson, and Kim Jones; three cousins, Cora Kelly of New York, NY, Zenobia Johnson of Atlanta, GA, and Marilyn Walton of Long Pond, PA; along with a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, second cousins, in-laws and extended family members, among them a devoted sister-in-law, Rev. Janie D Jones.

 He was raised and educated in the Richmond Public School System, and received Christ at an early age, baptized and served at The Moore Street Baptist Church while participating with the Boy Scouts of America. Upon graduating from Maggie L Walker High School, he attended Virginia State College, now VSU for two years, and enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served three years before returning to complete his Bachelor of Science degree.

 John started his 30 plus year career as a counselor for Richmond Public Schools while moving up the ranks in the Army Reserves, which led to him returning to active duty for nine years. Overall, he completed a 30 plus year career with the U.S. Army, Richmond Public Schools and his part-time tenure with Chesterfield County Parks & Recreation simultaneously.

Additionally, he completed graduate studies at VSU as well as his doctoral course requirements at VPI and UVA, vowing to defend his dissertation, but never had the time due to family commitments. John was a devoted and supportive member of the Virginia State University Greater Petersburg Area Alumni Association, where he served in many capacities, looking forward to participating in their annual fundraisers and homecoming weekends.

John was most proud to be a life-time member of the Delta Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and proudly supported most of his chapter’s activities, especially the Talent Hunt, Mardi Gras, tailgating, car raffles and conferences. He attended monthly online chapter meetings and stayed in touch with his frat brothers until his health declined.

Services will be held 1:00 P.M., Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Third Baptist Church, 550 Farmer Street, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Dr. Jerome C. Ross, officiating. The interment at Arlington National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
